Insights from Albanian University Students in the Balkans

Recent research documents the mental health challenges faced by university students in Kosovo, North Macedonia, and Albania, with important implications for diaspora communities.

Insights from Albanian University Students in the Balkans

A growing body of research documents the mental health experiences of Albanian university students across the Balkans. The findings reveal a complex, multi-layered challenge, and offer pathways forward that are relevant both in the region and for Albanian communities in Canada.

Mental Health Awareness and Stigma

Research demonstrates that Albanian students possess moderate mental health awareness, though significant education gaps persist. Stigma rooted in cultural traditions remains a substantial barrier. Families and communities frequently treat mental health concerns as inappropriate topics, fostering secrecy and disconnection for struggling individuals.

Universities: Missed Opportunities

Universities in the region fall significantly short in providing mental health support. Only 20% of students reported having their mental health needs met by their universities. Students identified absent counseling services, unsupportive faculty attitudes, and unwelcoming campus environments as key deficiencies.

A Multi-Layered Challenge

The analysis demonstrates how individual, interpersonal, institutional, and societal factors interconnect. Students internalize cultural messages of shame; families discourage disclosure; schools lack resources; and broader social narratives perpetuate misconceptions. Comprehensive solutions must address all of these layers simultaneously.

Pathways to Change

Proposed interventions include enhanced educational campaigns, community work to challenge stigmatizing beliefs, expanded university counseling availability, and stronger government commitment through policy and funding across Albania and Kosovo.

Relevance for Albanian-Canadian Communities

These findings hold direct relevance for diaspora populations who share Balkans cultural heritage and traditional perspectives on mental health. Understanding the cultural roots of stigma is a necessary step toward dismantling it, here and abroad.
